Sixty-seven GOP House members overrode Secretary of State Steve Simon’s declaration of adjournment and then named Rep. Lisa Demuth as speaker of the House.
The incoming lot of 66 DFL House members made good on their threat to boycott the first day of the 2025 legislative session on Tuesday.
And the 67 Republican House members who showed up to work equally made good on their promise to elect a new speaker.
Rep. Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, was named speaker of the House by her colleagues present in the Minnesota House of Representatives right around 1 p.m. She becomes the first African American elected to lead the chamber.
